It has been said that all humans are creative. This has been proven to be true. However, it’s undeniable that some of us are more creative than others. Some even consider themselves “called” to be artists. Try as they might, such individuals cannot outrun this calling. It haunts them day and night with urges to create art in ways they feel are just beyond their abilities.

3 Ways to Tap Into Your Inner Creative Genius

Are you an artist? Do you feel the ache deep in your soul to create beautiful and unusual works of art? Do you believe you are not creating the caliber of art that you are “called” to create? If so, take heart. You can tap into your inner creative genius in deceptively simple ways like these:

1) Unplug from technology every now and then – Most of us have mentally chided ourselves many times for overusing technology. More and more, we are learning about the negative effects of constant technology usage. Could one unwanted consequence of overusing digital devices be a lack of creativity? Maybe. Find out for yourself by unplugging from technology for 30-60 minutes a day. See if your ability to create is enhanced as a result. If so, you’ve found a great way to tap into your inner creative genius whenever you desire.

2) Use your non-dominant hand more often – Did you know that actively using your non-dominant hand might just open up the floodgates of creativity? It’s true. 85 percent of people are right-hand dominant, meaning their left hand holds the key to creativity…literally. In fact, the left hand is connected to the right side of the brain, which is often responsible for creativity (or lack thereof). Kim Ranegar explains, “Because brain mapping shows that creativity is housed in the right hemisphere of our brains, experts say we can stimulate this right brain through working with our ‘wrong’ hand. This also works for lefties, as studies indicate that one hemisphere is active when we use our dominant hand, but both hemispheres are activated when we use our non-dominant hand.” Will you give your non-dominant hand a chance to take over for a while if it means increased creativity?

3) Stop being so critical – Have you made it a habit to criticize others’ artwork? (Be honest, now.) If so, know that being unnecessarily critical about the creations of others may hinder your personal creative process. You might find that taking just one day to refrain from criticizing others will inspire you artistically like never before.
