Do Vision Boards Really Work? (And How to Make One.)

Do vision boards really work? That’s a great question. There are some people who swear by them. Others disprove their effectiveness. However, the results some people claim to get from creating vision boards has piqued the interest of thousands.
What is a Vision Board?
There is a lot of talk about vision boards, but the definition of one often goes undiscussed. According to the article What is a Vision Board?,
“A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life.”
Many people claim that creating a vision board has changed their life, bringing them the relationship, home, or even the child of their dreams. Our question is “can vision boards truly bring desired things into one’s life?” Elizabeth Rider, writer for the Huffington Post, thinks so. She wrote,
“Creating a sacred space (a vision board) that displays what you want actually does bring it to life. What we focus on expands. When you create a vision board and place it in a space where you see it often, you essentially end up doing short visualization exercises throughout the day.”
Apparently, it is the visualization exercises, not the board itself, a vision board inspires that bring forth the things one desires.
How to Make a Vision Board
There’s only one way to find out for yourself if a vision board really does work, and it involves creating your own vision board. Here’s how:
1) Gather your materials – First, gather the materials you’ll need for your vision board. You may want to spend a few dollars on a corkboard and thumbtacks. Then, make a collage of photos that inspire you. (Here is a free collage maker.) If you want a new house, include photos of your dream home. If you want to get in shape, include photos of someone with your desired physique. You get the idea. Then, print off the collage and cut the photos out individually.
2) Create the board based on what you want AND how you want to feel – When you craft your vision board, be careful to not only design it based it on what you want materially, but also on how you want to feel. Elizabeth Rider stated, “Your vision board should focus on how you want to feel, not just on things that you want. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to include the material stuff, too. However, the more your board focuses on how you want to feel, the more it will come to life.”
3) Put it all together – Putting your vision board together is the easy and fun part of this process. Arrange your photos in a way that is soul-satisfying and inspiring, and then place your vision board in a place where you will see it before you go to sleep and when you first wake up.
Have You Ever Made a Vision Board?
Even if vision boards do not bring physical, emotional, and relational blessings into a person’s life, they do bring hope. Since hope is priceless and hard to come by, making a vision board isn’t a bad idea. And, who knows? Maybe creating a vision board will be your secret to success.
