Three Unusual Christmas Tree Trends of 2018

December 12, 2018 Jessica 0 Comments

What color is your Christmas tree this year? If you are like most people, it is green, whether live or fake. Also, white Christmas trees or green trees laden heavily with fake snow have been popular for some time. This year, though, not-so-green (or white) trees are becoming more trendy.

Martin Luther Credited with Christmas Tree Decor

The Christmas tree originated in Germany in the 16th Century. During this time, devout Christians would bring decorated trees into their dwellings. Interestingly, Martin Luther is credited with adding lighted candles to his Christmas tree.

“Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles,” wrote a contributor to HISTORY.

Today, unusual-looking Christmas trees are becoming more commonplace. For example, black, red, and pink trees are making their way into people’s homes this holiday season.

3 Unusual Christmas Trees Trending this Season

Here are three non-traditional Christmas tree trends of 2018:

1) Black Christmas trees — Believe it or not, some people are loving the idea of a black Christmas tree. Black trees are a “hot holiday decorating trend,” according to ABC. “Searches for black trees are up 70 percent compared to last year on Wayfair.com, the home furnishings company told ‘Good Morning America.’” A black tree may sound Halloween-y, but when fully decorated it can look elegant and refreshingly different.

2) Red Christmas trees — Did you know that first lady Melania Trump decorated the White House with red Christmas trees this year? “Our theme honors the heart and spirit of the American people. Thank you to the many volunteers and staff who worked hard to decorate the halls of the People’s House in Christmas cheer. On behalf of my family, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” she stated.

3) Pink Christmas trees — No longer are pink Christmas trees relegated to ballet studios — they are popping up in the homes of shabby chic enthusiasts everywhere. Shabby chic is a decorating style that uses furnishings and bedding that appear to be slightly worn. This style has become wildly popular in the past couple of decades, and pink Christmas trees lend themselves perfectly to this ultra-feminine type of decor.
