4 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2019

December 31, 2018 Jessica 2 Comments

Each year, thousands of well-meaning people make and break New Year’s resolutions. In fact, 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. This statistic is dismal, but there are ways you can ensure you reach your goals for the coming year.

4 Practical Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2019

No matter whether or not you’ve failed in the past, you can keep your New Year’s resolutions for 2019. Here are a few effective ways to do this:

1. Be specific — When deciding on your resolutions, be as specific as you can. For example, instead of resolving to lose weight, intend to lose a set amount of weight by a specific date. “Lose 5 pounds by March 1st” is far less intimidating than “lose all excess weight this year.” It also gives your mind the details it needs to empower you to make permanent changes.

2. Make resolutions fun — According to Go Skills, some of the most common New Year’s resolutions individuals set each year include:

  • Lose weight
  • Exercise more
  • Quit smoking
  • Save money
  • Travel more

While these are fine goals, they are not always easy to work towards. Why? Because the process of achieving them isn’t necessarily enjoyable. Help yourself realize your personal objectives in 2019 by having one or two fun New Year’s resolutions. One example is “create more art.”

Creating art is for everyone, not just the artistically inclined. For you this could look like taking a drawing or painting class or simply downloading art-based mobile apps that get you away from Facebook and help you exercise your creativity muscles.

3. Get help from others — A major reason why people don’t reach their goals each year is because they don’t get the support they need. A classic example is someone who wants to quit smoking but attempts it on his or her own, without the help of a support group or counselor.

Which of your New Year’s resolutions for 2019 will you need help working toward? Seek support for at least one of them. More than likely, it will be the one you see the most growth in.

4. Keep your list short — Setting New Year’s resolutions is a positive and hopeful way to start the new year. However, to see that you reach your goals, keep your list short.

Many people list numerous resolutions at the start of each year. By restricting your list to three or less items, you’ll increase your chances of making the changes you want to make in 2019.

If your New Year’s resolutions list is already too long, ask yourself what you really want to achieve this year. When it comes to resolutions, anything is fair game. Just remember that your list should be two things: authentic and succinct.

What are Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2019?

Have you decided on your 2019 New Year’s resolutions yet? If not, take a few minutes to make a list of the changes you’d like to make this year. By being specific about your goals, making resolutions fun, getting the support you need, and keeping your list short, you will increase your chances of succeeding.
